9. Other Services Provided by NZBS

9.7 New Zealand Transplantation And Immunogenetics Laboratory (NZTIL)

The New Zealand Transplantation and Immunogenetics Laboratory is also located in the NZBS Auckland centre and is responsible for histocompatibility testing in support of New Zealand’s haematopoietic cell and solid organ transplant programmes. NZTIL provides a 24/7 service to support the deceased donor programme for solid organ transplants in NZ.  The laboratory also carries out testing for disease association markers, human leucocyte antigen (HLA) types associated with hypersensitive drug reactions, antibodies implicated in transfusion-related reactions, antibodies against platelet antigens and the provision of compatible or matched platelets.

The following provides an indication of the wide range of work undertaken:

  • HLA Class I and Class II typing
  • Anti-HLA antibody screening
  • T- and B-lymphocyte crossmatching
  • Platelet-associated antibody testing
  • Anti-HPA antibody testing
  • Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) investigation
  • HPA genotyping
  • Platelet Refractory Investigations
  • Drug Induced Thrombocytopenia Investigations
  • TRALI Investigations

NZTIL also runs the NZ Kidney Allocation Scheme for deceased donors, in conjunction with Clinical Transplant Teams.
